Sports Day

Patrician Academy Sports Day

The late but very heavy April Showers did nothing to dampen the spirits of the Academy Students as they took to the field in their droves last Friday to participate in what has become one of the highlights of the year – The School Sports Day

Junior classes were pitted against each other in an attempt to gain points for their class. Everything from athletics to GAA to novelty events were on offer. Senior classes had a very serious soccer tournament which resulted in a win for a bunch of brave fifth year students. Trophies for this tournament were kindly sponsored by the parents association. The winning class at Junior level will be announced this week –  and will enjoy a trip to the cinema. Much thanks must go to Mr. Pat Heffernan sports co-ordinator in the school, who organised this fantastic day.

There has always been a huge commitment to sport in the Academy, a school which has had sportsmen such as Dr. Pat O’Callaghan, the Olympian hammer thrower, together with many other sportsmen among its famous past pupils.sports3

Traditionally the Academy has produced winning hurling and gaelic football teams at all age levels and the team coaches, drawn from the staff have been unstinting in their work.

The Academy has also a long tradition (beginning with Bro. Simeon) in rugby and the school produces many winning teams.

Golf is another sport in which the school has fielded many winning teams at Munster and All Ireland levels.sports1

Tennis is also well represented with teams at various age levels.

Basketball is yet another sports outlet for the students of the Academy.

Handball, Fishing and many other sports are included in the schools activities.
